- Letter (November 10, 1997) and letter
(January 28, 1998) from Margaret A. Somerville (Gale Professor of Law, McGill
University and Founding Director, McGill Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law, Montreal,
Quebec, Canada) to Dr. C. Robin Walker (Chief, Division of Neonatology, Children's
Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Ottawa, Ontario Canada). These two most recent letters
further detail the position of professor Somerville with regard to the legality
and ethics of infant male circumcision. Presented with Dr. Somerville's permission.
- Other correspondence
between Mr. Dennis Harrison and various Canadian authorities questioning the ethics
of infant male circumcision.
- Medical Interventions and the Criminal Law: Lawful or Excusable
Wounding? Article by Margaret A. Somerville in the McGill Law Journal,
Vol. 26 (1980), pp. 82-96. With certain exceptions, any wounding of one person by
another is considered illegal, although surgical interventions with a therapeutic
intent are excluded. But what about purely cosmetic interventions (or other non-therapeutic
interventions) on non-consenting individuals?
note: this is a long (52K) and highly technical article.
